Making Music - By Nitya Ramanan -

Joy Basu took to strumming the guitar when he was 12. "As soon as I started, I really could not imagine doing anything else," says the 30-year-old guitarist who has made music in many gigs involving classic rock, pop, and R&B-he also has performed with CoCo Lee, and shared the limelight with rap/rock art Extra Ordinary Magnitude. For the past year, he has been performing with Sony double platinum artist Jessica Simpson. Basu lives and works in Los Angeles, in the heart of the cutthroat entertainment business. However, he has encountered few difficulties as a foreigner seeking to make a mark in a mainstream industry. "Los Angeles is a melting pot of people. The entertainment industry has a place and need for all races, shapes and sizes. The competition is really tough no matter where you are from. There are a lot of talented people here, which makes me work harder as well as appreciate and enjoy everything 1 am getting to do." However, as a second-generation Indian in an unusual profession, he is definitely thankful for a supportive family. "I would generalize and say most Indian families are not supportive of nontraditional professions. ... This profession is probably the nightmare of most parents around the world," he admits. Basu has been on seven CDs so far. He is in the process of recording two more at the moment. In the future, he would like to collaborate more with other musicians, and also get into the production aspect of music. And he intends to enjoy life doing it. "Playing music and traveling the world doing it seems to be a fun way to keep going," he says.
